Like commences, flowing into nooks and cranies of avenues that were never preplanned. It's no such thing as destiny or so Leonore learned early on. Her mark wasn't predetermined nor were the scars that were inescapable in her adult life. Twenty-nine years ago marked the day that Rosaline and Orlando presented Leonore to the world. The day turned into night, waiting on her arrival as she was the second addition to the small family they were building to carry on the Vidal name. Leonore was a fussy child, only chilled by the mellow peak of her mother's voice whenever she sung. Notes of Celia Cruz and other Latino artists she favored, became a staple into the songs sung to allow her baby to soothe into a decent night's rest. The child would come to expect the luxury of being sung to sleep well until she was able to verbally request it. She was a demanding child, always wanting things her way, groomed to ask for it before claiming the victory after winning it. This played on as she got a little older and tried to be assertive to match the pace of her older sister Julissa. They eventually became thick as thieves, as Leonore had someone to match her in advancement and adventure. The love of dare devilish antics grew in her youth, which her father, someone who was into fishing, took her under his wing during boating trips. This spiked her interest in earning for self with an emphasis of man being taught to fish, instead of being given everything without learning. She learned a lot with a budding father-daughter relationship, because there was no son to pass on special knowledge to. She showed promise and greater interest in channeling her blossoming energy with sports, having tried softball, to basketball, and other team situations. Julissa encouraged her little sister to keep at it despite the constant prodding of being too much like a boy, when she felt just as herself by harboring a tom-boyish nature. This helped her greatly with nurturing relationships with boys that went beyond likes and build great bonds with. At age 8, she wanted to shed being referred to Leonore but called Jesse instead. It felt like herself and left little expectations by always being the prim one out of the two Vidal sisters. This would follow her until the present, where it was mostly what she responded to. Leonore's expressway into a teen was a rocky one but well managed through keeping up with physical activities and balancing the books. She was a standard student, who often spent time in detention for clowning around with her close friends, especially her best friend that she grew up with. The bond carried between the two, even through their junior year where they both planned to remain in state rather pass on to schools that could have offered other opportunities. Only one of the two, including her older sister, would never see any of it come to fruition. Camping became a spring and summer tradition, only the tradition come to an end during early summer of 2003, it was the heart of the weekend with a semi full campsite. The three girls, who were trusted on this outing, hoped to finish out their trip with a bang. The only bang that transpired was a passing predator making a pit stop before going on his next destination. The stranger was unknown but merged within the site as other campers have done. Coming and going, only with desperation on the mind, lack of money motivated the perpetrator to seek and prey upon the weak. In his eyes he viewed the Vidal girls and their friend as such. On the evening before coming back from a hike, the three were met with unforeseen force. The individual had demands, with those demands, violence and the real threat presented itself. Weapons were involved, a knife in particular used with the demand. When Leonore's sister wouldn't back down, or fought as much as she could to save her sister, it was too late. A head start was given by Julissa attempting to fend off the guy but much damage was done. The fight given failed her best friend, leaving her bludgeoned and bloodied, while her sister sustained wounds marked by the knife. By memory, she tried to help lessen the damage, managing to knock out the man through help of a rock and by sheer luck. Leonore ran for help after being handled violently herself, which left the two struggling to survive while the man remained unconscious. The night forever burned in her head as other campers helped aide in getting the girls to the hospital while authorities were summoned. Leonore shaken nature and what would be a bout of survivors guilt, got the best of her once injuries sustained between her sister and close friend, led to their deaths as days in the hospital was not enough to put them on the mends. The fault of which fell onto her shoulders, but knew that it had not been. The horror of enduring the unfortunate event and having to watch her sister try to ward off danger, the failing, kept her awake nights following it. Courses of which she wanted to take were put on hold, causing her to slide into a depression state while avoiding the things that meant much to her. School even, was placed on hold while endearing the loss of the closest people to her. Her parents tried to be there while they too were handling the loss of their eldest child. Times became rough for all in connection to the girls and it showed heavily as a couple of years turned on. Leonore was at home, not in school, but slowly trying to extract herself from the hole she grew used to in its safety. The sickness of holding onto a grip of anger, sorrow, and other pieces of grief, turned her onto getting physical, especially in the corners of a dank gym. Luckily enough, a relative that was a retired amateur boxer, done their part with persuasion to teach her the art. Her hunger to feel secure, safe, and powerful, was enough to fuel her into an unstoppable force. Raw energy and pushes to fight through the pain suffered, helped motivate to be better than what the dangerous man reduced her to. Leonore grew obsessive with training, even through her start of college. It helped keep her mind sharp. Gave her confidence once lost. And restored the light that had been snubbed out since that fateful evening. The loss of her sister and best friend couldn't have been in vain, while she carried that disaster with her up until the present. It lingered on enough that with much of her accomplishments squared away, there's still an unsettled spirit within searching for ways to make the sibling that saved her life, very much proud. Leonore spends her days trying to do right. Live by the want for better and doing so with tenacity that was shown towards her through the late Julissa. It would only be a matter of time before the circle to come full stop. |
